Zooming into coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of a human cell infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The virus particles are seen as red spheres on the surface of the cell (yellow). HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a retrovirus that forms particles some 120 nanometres in diameter, comprising its RNA genome and capsid proteins. It infects and destroys cells in the human immune system, severely weakening the patient and leaving them open to opportunistic infections. These are 293T cells, a human cell line widely used in research. Specimen courtesy of Professor Greg Towers, University College London | |
