Technician performing an amniocentesis sampling on a pregnant woman. Amniocentesis involves using a syringe to remove a small amount of amniotic fluid, the fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb. Ultrasound is used to determine the location of the foetus, and care taken to avoid it. The amniotic fluid contains foetal tissues, allowing it to be tested for genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, and it can also be used to determine the sex of the foetus. The test is typically performed between weeks 14 and 16 of gestation. Filmed in 1990. | |
