Surveying hurricane coral reef damage in the Caribbean. Scuba divers for the National Natural Reserve of Saint Martin carrying out an underwater survey of a coral reef damaged by a hurricane. This damage was caused by Hurricane Irma, which made landfall on 6 September 2017 on the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. It was a category 5 storm with sustained winds of 295 kilometres per hour. This survey was carried out two months after the hurricane, and found extensive damage to elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) and staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis). | |
