Hurricane coral reef damage in the Caribbean. Broken corals on a reef damaged by a hurricane. This damage was caused by Hurricane Irma, which made landfall on 6 September 2017 on the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. It was a category 5 storm with sustained winds of 295 kilometres per hour. A survey carried out two months after the hurricane found extensive damage to elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) and staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis). | |
