A Pearl-spotted owlet (Glaucidium perlatum) thermoregulating whilst perched on the branch of a camelthorn tree. This small owl reaches a length of less than 20 centimetres and so it is often termed an owlet. It is a carnivorous predator that hunts its prey of arthropods, lizards, snakes and small mammals mainly at dawn and dusk. It is also active during the day and on moonlit nights. It has a whistled call and inhabits open woodland and scrubland in Africa below the Sahara. It is common in southern Africa. Filmed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park of Botswana and South Africa. | |
