The layers of an artery fade away to reveal an atherosclerotic lesion. Atherosclerosis is a disease that causes a blood vessel to narrow because of plaque build-up. In this video, fatty plaque (yellow) is existent throughout the arterial walls, however the specific location of the lesion is highlighted. The lipid core of the lesion (yellow) is first illuminated, followed by the fibrotic lining (white). This lesion is restricting blood flow, and has the potential of haemorrhaging (rupturing the blood vessel and causing internal bleeding) and prompting thrombosis (blood clotting within the artery). | |
