Meerkats (Suricata suricatta). Meerkats, also known as suricates, are active mongooses that live in colonies in underground burrows. They feed during the day, mainly on insects, while remaining close to the burrow. The clip shows group of meerkats digging for insects whilst southern yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) watches on and collects insects, which the meerkats have overlooked. The hornbill in this instance is on the receiving side in this commensal interaction. Commensalism, in biology, is defined as relation between individuals of two species in which one species obtains food or other benefits from the other species without either harming or benefiting the latter. Filmed in the Auob riverbed of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Southern Africa. | |
