Meerkats (Suricata suricatta). Meerkats, also known as suricates, are active mongooses that live in colonies in underground burrows. These gregarious animals live in groups, and several families may live together in large community. Everyone in the mob participates in gathering food, keeping look out for predators, and taking care of the babies. The clip shows family of Meerkats at the entrance to their burrow at dawn before they are about to commence foraging. Towards the end of the clip the group gets excited and bands together in order to intimidate another family of Meerkats they had spotted. The group then departs in unison to commence feeding. Filmed in the Auob riverbed of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Southern Africa. | |
