Changing skin of a mutable rainfrog (Pristimantis mutabilis). This fingernail-sized frog can change its skin texture from spiny to smooth in a few minutes. It is the first shape-shifting amphibian ever found. It was discovered on the western slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes Mountains, in a protected cloudforest reserve. The misty, fog-enshrouded Choc cloud forest is a biodiversity hotspot, and the protected area, called Los Cedros Reserve, is also home to several rare birds and butterflies. A new glass frog species, the Las Gralarias glass frog, was reported there in 2012. | |
