African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) mating. Also known as the black-footed penguin and the jackass penguin (because of its braying donkey-like call), this penguin is found in breeding colonies on islands off Namibia and South Africa, and at a few places on the South African mainland. It spends much of its time at sea, feeding on fish, squid and crustaceans. It breeds and moults on land. It can reach a length of 50 centimetres. The pink patches over the eyes are blood-rich sweat glands that help cool the bird. The African penguin is the only penguin to breed on the African continent. Photographed on Boulders Beach, Simonstown, in the Western Cape of South Africa. | |
