Astrotourism in the Atacama Desert. Time-lapse footage of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the night sky above observatory domes for amateur astronomers at the Atacama Lodge hotel in Chile. Located near San Pedro de Atacama, in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, this is an example of astrotourism. This is a form of tourism that caters for tourists wanting to view the night sky. The telescopes are robotic and operated remotely by amateur astronomers in other countries. The clear and dry skies above the Atacama Desert are among the best in the world for stargazing. On the horizon is light pollution from a lithium mine. Footage filmed in April 2016. | |
