Surface temperature on Proxima b, animated simulation. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the Sun. Proxima b is its orbiting rocky planet, discovered in 2016. This simulation of the planet's surface temperatures is based on the hypothesis that it has an Earth-like atmosphere and is covered by an ocean (dashed line indicates the boundary between surface liquid and ice). Here the planet is in a so-called 3:2 resonance (rotating 3 times every 2 orbits of its star), and is seen during one full orbit. An alternative model is that it rotates once per orbit (synchronous rotation). Simulation by Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique's Planetary Global Climate Model. | |
