Aurorae on Jupiter, animation. Aurorae are produced when the solar wind (charged and energetic particles from the Sun) interacts with a planet's atmosphere. The particles collide with gases in the upper atmosphere, causing them to emit light. On Jupiter, as on Earth, aurorae occur near the poles because the magnetic field of the planet channels the charged particles to these regions. | |
