Neutrophil ingesting a yeast cell. Light microscopy time-lapse footage of a neutrophil (entering from lower right) sensing, moving towards, and ingesting a yeast cell (centre). A neutrophil is a type of white blood cell involved in defence against infections, in this case by a yeast fungus. The indicator dye nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) has been added to demonstrate that the white blood cell is using its lethal oxidative ability to kill the yeast. The NBT dye is being reduced around the circumference of the yeast cell. This video has been colour-enhanced to show the degree and location of the oxidative burst (red and black). This is a neutrophil from a human immune system. | |
