Inhibitor strategy against HIV infection. Animation showing the effect of an inhibitor on the process of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Across bottom is the surface of a CD4 lymphocyte. This is a T helper cell (a white blood cell that is part of the human immune system) that expresses the CD4 surface protein (yellow, spherical). Also present on the lymphocyte is the CCR5 (C-C chemokine receptor type 5) molecule (blue, conical) that plays a role in helping HIV particles (one at top) to infect these cells. This meshing of the surface proteins and receptors is shown in the first part of this animation. The second part of the animation shows a chemokine being used as an inhibitor (red) to cover CCR5 and CD4 and prevent the interaction with HIV.
