Flu virus infection mechanism. Animation of the mechanism by which the influenza (flu) virus infects host cells. The virus particle (left) has surface proteins (haemagglutinin, red and green) that allow the virus to attach to receptors (orange) on the surface of the target cell. The virus then undergoes endocytosis, being enveloped in the cell membrane. Mid-way through the animation, virus particle is shown enveloped in membrane, forming an endosome. The final stage is the fusing of the endosomal membrane with the viral membrane, releasing the virus nucleic acids (inside particle) into the cell cytoplasm (right).
