Timelapse footage of the opening traps of a Venus flytrap plant (Dionaea muscipula). The Venus flytrap is a carnivorous plant that inhabits wetlands in the eastern USA. It has traps formed from modified leaves, which snap shut when guard hairs on their inner surfaces are disturbed by a curious insect. The trap then secretes digestive juices that break down the insect, allowing the plant to digest its nutrients. The traps re-open a week or two later, ready for their next meal. | |
