Paramecium caudatum cells out of a culture showing the behavior of the individuals in an electric field. When the voltage of about 7 Volts is applied to the prepared specimen slide, the ciliates show a negative galvanotaxis, the individuals immediately begin to swim towards the negative terminal, the cathode. Note the indicator symbols on the left and right side of the clip when the Voltage is applied. The spectacular forced locomotion of Paramecium in a DC field was first described by Verworn 1888. However it had been little understood until the membrane theory of excitation became applicable. In summary galvanotaxis means the voltage dependence of ciliary motor control in Paramecium.
