Light microscope footage of the heterotrichous ciliate Stentor coeruleus. Stentor coeruleus has a trumpet-shaped body with a length up to 3mm, the conspicuous moniliform macronucleus is clearly visible. The ciliate has a bluish colour, caused by bluish cortical granules. Stentor coeruleus are filter feeders feeding on a broad spectrum of organisms as bacteria, flagellates, diatoms, ciliates and even rotifers. Stentor coeruleus species have a wide distribution, occurring in freshwater in benthic and planktonic habitats, occurring as sessile ciliate as well as free swimming. This sample was taken from a small brook. Microscopic contrast technique: oblique lighting. Captured field width: 0.8mm | |
