African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) performing a courtship ritual. Other names for this penguin include the black-footed penguin and the jackass penguin (because of its braying donkey-like call). Penguins are flightless marine birds. This penguin is found in breeding colonies on islands off Namibia and South Africa, and at a few places on the South African mainland. It spends much time at sea, feeding on fish, squid and crustaceans. It breeds and moults on land and can reach a length of 50 centimetres. The pink patches over the eyes are blood-rich sweat glands that help cool the bird. The African penguin is the only penguin to breed on the African continent. Filmed on Boulders Beach, Simonstown, in the Western Cape of South Africa. | |
