Animation of the microscope used by the English scientist Robert Hooke (1635-1703). Hooke used this microscope to make detailed studies of insects, plants and some artificial objects, which he published in his 1665 book Micrographia. This was the first time such illustrations had been made and published, and the book was quickly a best-seller. In it, Hooke coined the word 'cell' to describe the small bodies that make up organisms. The microscope was made by Christopher White of London.
