Light microscope footage of Difflugia pyriformis testate amoeba, showing their movement in timelapse. The original capturing time was about 6 min. Testate amoeba are a polyphyletic group of amoeboid protozoans with a shell or test that is unique to that particular species. Difflugia have agglutinated shells composed of mineral particles or diatom frustules, that are assembled on structured or sheet-like organic cement. All species of Difflugia acquire their shell particles from their environment. The cells shown here have collected very large sand grains for their tests and have a length of about 150 m. They were found in a sphagnum habitat near Cologne, the Wahner Heide. Microscopic contrast method used : Phase contrast. Captured field width : 0, 8mm | |
