Milky Way galactic centre. Pan across an infrared VISTA image of a part of the sky close to the centre of our Milky Way galaxy (in the constellation of Sagittarius). Within this part of the sky astronomers have discovered a dozen new variable stars. This discovery suggests that the bulging centre of the Milky Way likely grew through the merging of primordial star clusters. Image data obtained by the the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). Image published in 2016. | |
