Superior mirage distorting a view of a cargo ship crossing a channel. A superior mirage is an optical effect that produces an image of an object above the actual image of it. In this case, the ship has a mirror image of itself above it. Superior mirages are caused when light from the object passes through a temperature inversion, a layer of cold, dense air beneath a warmer layer. As light passes through the cold air, it is refracted downwards towards the observer. The image can be upside down or the right way up, depending on the arrangement of the object, air layers and observer. These mirages are more common in Polar regions, where surface air is cooled by ice or frigid land or water. Filmed in Finland. | |
