| Addison's disease causing the hand of a 28 year old female patient to darken due to hyperpigmentation. A normal hand is shown on the left for comparison. Addison's disease is a rare disorder where the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, don't produce enough cortisol and aldosterone hormones. Symptoms of Addison’s disease include fatigue, areas of skin that are darker than surrounding skin, loss of appetite and joint pain. In most cases, the cause is due to the body's immune system mistakenly attacking the adrenal glands. Treatment involves hormone replacement therapy with medication. | |
