| Illustration of the British biophysicist Aaron Klug (1926-2018). Klug combined methods from X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy to study the structure of biomolecular complexes. He received the 1982 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the structural elucidation of biologically important nucleic acid-protein complexes. Between 1986 and 1992 Klug was director of the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge, UK, where he was instrumental in setting up the Sanger Centre to participate in the Human Genome Project. From 1995-2000 he was president of the Royal Society of London. | |
