| Vitiligo (loss of pigment) on the skin of the face of a patient with Addison's disease. Addison's disease results from the adrenal glands producing insufficient hormone. It may be caused by a disorder with the adrenal glands themselves, or insufficient secretion of the hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands by the pituitary gland. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, low blood pressure and a bronze skin pigment. Treatment is by replacing the hormones (cortisol and occasionally aldosterone) that are not being produced with synthetic versions. | |
