| Systemic scleroderma on the hand of a 52 year old male patient. Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks its own cells, causing an overproduction of collagen. This causes hard, thickened areas of skin to form and can affect any part of the body. This case is systemic scleroderma, meaning it also affects blood circulation and internal organs. The cause is not entirely known but it is thought to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental triggers. There is no cure, but topical steroids, anti-inflammatories and immunosuppressive drugs can help manage symptoms. | |
