| Guttate psoriasis on the back of a 12 year old female patient. Psoriasis refers to a group of chronic, inflammatory skin diseases that occur when skin cells are produced much faster than normal. The body cannot shed the new cells fast enough, resulting in patches (plaques) of scaly, thick skin, which are often itchy. Guttate psoriasis is a distinct variant of psoriasis that causes many small, scaly, teardrop-shaped lesions to form on the body. It can appear without warning or following an infection such as strep throat. The majority of guttate psoriasis cases are seen in children and young adults. Treatments depend on the severity of the case. For milder cases, anti-inflammatories, topical steroids and phototherapy are used. For a close-up image of this patient see SPL code C058/6313. | |
