| Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) on the hands of a 58 year old male patient. Porphyria is the name given to a group of rare genetic disorders, characterised by an enzyme deficiency that leads to a build-up of porphyrin in the body. PCT is a type of porphyria that causes the skin to become sensitive to light, leading to burns, blisters, and swelling. It is the only porphyria disorder that is more often acquired rather than inherited. Triggers include high iron levels in the body, heavy alcohol consumption and smoking. Treatment for PCT focuses on managing the symptoms through lifestyle changes, such as restricting sun exposure and avoiding alcohol. | |
