| Neuroblastoma of the adrenal gland. Neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer that commonly arises from nerve cells in the adrenal glands, located just above the kidneys. Neuroblastoma cancer cells can spread (metastasise) quickly to other areas of the body, such as, lymph nodes, liver, lungs, bones, central nervous system and bone marrow. Treatment is with surgical removal of the tumours where possible, along with radiation and chemotherapy. Approximately two-thirds of children diagnosed with neuroblastoma will have some metastatic disease. Neuroblastoma is rare in children older than 10 years, although it does occur occasionally in adults. |
