| Mucormycosis fungal skin infection. Light micrograph of mycelial filaments and inflammatory cells (granulocytes and lymphocytes, dark areas) in a skin sample in a case of mucormycosis (or zygomycosis). The tissue is infected with a Zygomycete fungus. Zygomycete fungi are widely distributed in the air, water and soil. They do not normally cause infection, however patients with compromised immune systems, such as those with AIDS, burns patients or patients on steroid therapy may develop the disease. The fungus can infect the lungs, sinuses, gastrointestinal system, or the skin. This sample was prepared with a periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain.
