Brants' whistling rat (Parotomys brantsii) basking and feeding at dawn. These diurnal rodents live in a complex burrow system which helps the rats to take cover rapidly when predators threaten. This rodent obtained its name from the tendency it has to emit a high-pitched alarm call when it senses danger. Photographed in the Goegap nature reserve, Northern Cape, South Africa. | |
