By the end of 2022, the many UK supermarkets had removed date labels on over 100 lines of fresh produce including tomatoes, pears, onions, citrus fruits, potatoes etc, substituting on-pack messages such as 'no date helps reduce waste'. According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), â??use byâ?? dates are linked to food safety, whereas â??best beforeâ?? dates relate to food quality. Research has repeatedly found that many customers mix the two terms up, throwing away food as soon as it reaches its best-before date. It is claimed that these upcoming changes could help UK households 'to save 11, 000 tonnes of food each year'. |
