Petechial lesions on the abdomen of a 69 year old Hispanic male patient with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). These small spots are due to minute haemorrhages. GPA, also known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a form of vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessel walls) that mainly affects the upper airways, lungs and kidneys. This causes a lack of blood flow that can lead to the formation inflammatory lesions (granulomas). The cause of PGA is not known. Due to its end-organ damage, it can be a serious disease that requires long-term immune suppression as treatment. | |
