Leonid Alekseyevich Kulik (1883-1942), Russian-Soviet mineralogist. Kulik is most famous for the 1927 expedition to the site of the Tunguska event, a massive explosion that occurred in Siberia in 1908. Kulik explained the event as a meteorite impact, although he never found a crater. Today it is though the event was the air burst of a meteor or comet fragment that exploded with a force of 10-15 megatons (millions of tons of TNT). This portrait is from part of a stamp released in 1958. | |
