Group of men loading a young sable antelope (Hippotragus niger), which has been tranquilized using a tranquilizer dart rifle, onto a vehicle to be translocated. This image was taken on a game farm in the Kimberley area of the Northern Cape in South Africa. Game farming is a method of farming that uses wildlife species as livestock instead of domesticated animals. Professional game farmers often sell surplus livestock to manage the population as these animals are mostly kept in large enclosures which do not house predators. Furthermore, the farmers introduce new animals so that the gene pool is managed to ensure a healthy population. Selective breeding can ensure that the farmer receives healthy returns on auction and in the hunting industry. Some farms also cater for ecotourism and the venison industry. | |
