Crested barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii) leaving the nest in which it roosts. Whilst the barbet might refine the inside of the cavity, the original hole was made by a woodpecker. Sequential use of holes by other species is common as woodpeckers often resort to making new holes each year. Crested barbets are monogamous, very territorial, vocal and can be aggressive towards other birds, especially during the mating season. Photographed in Kimberley, South Africa. | |
