Convection. A jar with water is heated at its centre by a Bunsen burner flame. As the water at the bottom of the jar heats up, its density decreases and thus it rises up. The heated water moves upward and reaches the surface. As it cools down, its density increases and it then sinks down. Such liquid convection currents move and redistribute the heat so that water temperature increases throughout the beaker. Here these convection currents are revealed by using crystals of purple potassium permanganate (KMnO4). | |
