Sodium reacts with water. A small piece of sodium metal (Na) is dropped into a vial with water (H2O), with a drop of phenolphthalein indicator added. Sodium reacts exothermically with water to produce sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2): Na + H2O -> NaOH + H2. The solution turns pink in the process, indicating formation of an alkali. | |
