Gray wolves (Canis lupus) were reintroduced in Yellowstone National Park in 1995 after local extinction. As an apex predator, they have had a marked effect on the elk and coyote population, which in turn has caused further changes in other flora and fauna of the ecosystem, an example of trophic cascade.
