Australopithecus africanus fossil skull. Australopithecus africanus was an extinct hominid species which may be an ancestor of modern humans. This fossil was discovered in 1925 in limestone caves at Sterkfontein, South Africa. A. africanus lived from 3.3 to 2.1 million years ago throughout much of Africa, and this fossil is estimated to be about 3 to 2.5 million years old. | |
