Coronal computed tomography (CT) scan of the lumbar spine passing through the L3 vertebral body of a 52-year-old patient with a Schmorl's node. Schmorl's nodules are protusions of the gelatinous core of the intervertebral disc that penetrate the trabecular bone (spongy bone) of the vertebral bodies. Most Schmorl's nodes are painless but some can lead to lower back pain. Treatment for painful Schmorl's nodes include rest and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Osteophytes (bony growths) have also formed. | |
