September 11 Twin Towers attacks. Illustration showing the impact zones on the South Tower (left) and North Tower (right) of the World Trade Center in New York City, USA, following the September 11 attacks in 2001. These impacts were made by two passenger planes hijacked by terrorists; American Airlines Flight 11 (red) and United Airlines Flight 175. Both were Boeing 767 aircraft that departed from Logan Airport, Boston, USA. They impacted the North Tower at 08:46 and South Tower at 09:03. The resulting debris trajectories are shown. The fires that broke out in the buildings caused them to collapse at 09:59 (South Tower) and 10:28 (North Tower). Many people evacuated safely, but 2763 people in the buildings and the surrounding area were killed. | |
