9th century AD limestone sculpture of the Mayan rain deity Chahk holding a large lightning axe. The Mayans believed that Chahk could strike the clouds to produce rain and thunder. The left hand of the sculpture is missing but would have mostly likely had a battle shield as shown in other depictions of Chahk. | |
