Grey heron (Ardea cinerea) and slider terrapins (Trachemys scripta elegans). These Slider terrapins were imported to Europe from the USA as pets and were released in the wild when they became to large to keep. They are now a serious threat to native species including birds such as the grey heron. The red-eared slider is listed by the IUCN as one of the world's 100 most invasive species and these turtles often fight with native animals for food, habitats, and other resources, putting the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) under pressure. They monopolise basking sites, trample birds nests and prey on young birds. Turtles that were raised in captivity can develop diseases that are unfamiliar to native species. | |
