Clusters of young fungus (Armillaria mellea) on a Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). While it grows on dead wood, when this fungus spreads to live trees and shrubs it will kill them. This gill fungus is widely distributed in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and gets its common name from the honey colour of the mature cap. This outbreak of young fungi was at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire, UK. | |
