Cap of a parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera). This is a distinctive mushroom found on grassland from above. The cap erects into a parasol shape that eventually rises at the edge as the gills open up beneath to release the spores. The dry cap has a central mound, or umbo, and the cap is covered in reddish-brown scales. The cap may be 25 centimetres (cm) and the stalk or stipe up to 30cm. It is widespread and common in Britain and Ireland and is found in most of the world's temperate regions. It is a popular edible mushroom in Europe. | |
