| Infra orbital salivary gland. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through the infra orbital salivary gland. This gland is absent in man while it is found in other mammals such as the cat and rabbit. These glands are located on the floor of the orbit beneath the eye. The glands secretes tears into the ducts that empty onto the surface of the conjunctiva of the eye. The glandular tissue contains ductules (white), which transport the glandular secretion to the larger ducts (not seen). The secretion of tears helps keep the front of the eyeball clean. They contain lysozyme, an enzyme that destroys bacteria. Magnification: x100 when printed 10cm wide. | |
