Engraving of the Powell & Lealand No.1 single lens microscope built around the mid nineteenth century. It was considered one of the best microscopes ever made & was in continuous production, with modifications, until the twentieth century. It was an all brass construction set on a tripod base with a centrable mechanical stage for the specimen (right). The microscope is here set up to make measurements through a micrometre eyepiece, which has its own support (pillar at extreme left) to keep it steady & aid accurate measurement. The engraving is from The Microscope & its revelationsins 7th edition 1891, by W.B. Carpenter. | |
